Oregon Pushing for a Green Environment
Posted by Dennis Pease on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 at 2:10am.
Due to being located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, Oregon has had a vast interest in sea faring activities. Moving toward newer green and sustainable approaches to various industries, Real estate brokers and those searching to remodel or purchase new homes should take the precautions necessary to rid any signs of asbestos. There are many things potential homeowners should understand about building materials before making the move.
Homes built prior to 1980 may contain asbestos and other harmful products. As long term cost and technology continues to evolve, so is the need for environmentally sustainable and healthy materials used for construction.
Organizations such as Environment Oregon have led efforts to harness the wind and sun for power and leave dirty, harmful energy behind. Working to pass renewable energy standards, Environment Oregon is mandating that most utilities attain 25 percent of our electricity from renewable sources by the year 2025. The organization is also pushing for tax credits and various programs to pay citizens of Oregon for renewable energy which they generate. Environment Oregon's staff brings together independent critical research and tough political initiatives to oppose special interest groups for natural results for the environment. This has helped individuals in the real estate work sector and industry workers achieve a healthy and suitable work environment.
Having employed thousands of jobs in the last half of the 20 th century, Oregon has had a high incidence of asbestos related illness and disease. Different forms of asbestos are common such as white, blue and brown. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can produce diseases such as mesothelioma lung cancer. Some of the more common forms include peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma.
In The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has undertaken evaluations of potential containment to determine whether the public was at risk due to the processing of vermiculite in Libby, Montana. They have also attempted to educate the public on alternative insulation and building materials.
This information is very close to my heart as prior to my real estate career I spent over 20 years in mining and 13 years in charge of drilling and blasting at a Rare Earth mine owned by Unocal that included asbestos as a byproduct. We were tested annually by MSHA for dust exposure and I know from those tests that I was exposed to large amounts of air borne asbestos.
If you believe you have been exposed to asbestos I have more contact information for people that can help. I have been advised to undergo testing myself and the importance of early detection. Contact me at: Dennis Pease - Eugene Real Estate Broker - Phone: 541-844-9287

Jessica, this post was somewhat stunning to me. I was contacted by the Awareness Coordinator at the Mesothelioma Cancer Center (www.asbestos.com) and provided with this information to help get the word out.
It was just a coincidence that it is a topic that hits close to home for me. Following the links will lead people to information and possible treatments available depending on which form of the cancer someone may have. I was told early detection is critical to survival from this very aggressive form of cancer.

asbestos is something to be extremely careful of. My father has asbestos related cancer, and has lost a kidney to it.

Sorry to hear about your Dad James. If it is job related and he has not already talked with Lawyers specializing in this I would encourage him to do so. These links give a lot of information and I do have other contact information if you need it.
Also if this is something you would be interested in blogging about I can put you in touch with the people that contacted me. This is a worthy cause and to make people aware that there is help available to them (financial & legal).

Actually there was a settlement that had to be joined buy a certain deadline which passed about 10 years ago now. My dad did not find out he had this issue until about 7 years ago. The company responcible has been completly bankrupt for 15 or 20 years now. He worked there for less then 2 years. His job was to unload box cars full of asbestos which was manufactured into tiles and insulation.

2 years exposure??? Wow. That's too bad he didn't get any help.
Well my friend with 13 years exposure here I guess I need a check up. The problem is that even with early detection this is a nasty form of cancer and even with early detection a person is looking at pretty serious surgeries.

This also brings to my mind the danger of lead based paint as well.

I am all for anything that helps the environment as well as our health. I hope you get the tax credits, I think that would help the cause and give people more incentive to make changes(as if improving your home/saving your health isn't enough...wink).

Oregon Campaign is really great! despite of the evolution of the new technology now, they still concerned about our environment situation and how does environmental element can affect human health.I hope that the whole world can have that kind of concern too, not only those people who engaged working in this kind of institution or organization.thanks for this wonderful blog you had shared. It was really informative.
I hope you that the result of your asbestos test will be negative although you are truly exposed on asbestos environment.
Have a good day!

In your article you mention only 2 common types of mesothelioma. But there is the 3d type - pleural. The vast majority of mesothelioma cases (about 80%) are pleural in nature.

Wow, I am not even sure where to go with this comment. The title grabbed my attention and being that I am just across the river in Washington, I think its great that they are pushing for the "Green".
But then I get down to the bottom of the story and all of the problems of asbestos. How do you treat that or can you?
