Eugene Oregon - Greenest Cities In America
Posted by Dennis Pease on Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 at 12:35am.Eugene focuses on Green Living and ranks the 5th Greenest City in a National Study by Popular Science. This study was done on cities with a population over 100,000 people. Oregon has three cities that meet that criteria and two of them are in the top 5 with Portland at #1, Congratulations Portland. Those of us that live in Oregon realize that many of the smaller areas are just as focused on Green Living, but because each city in this study had to have a minimum population of 100,000 people, Oregon's only city that that did not make the cut was Salem.
This study looked at four separate categories and gave them a points rating system with a total of 30 possible points. The categories are; Electricity, Transportation, Green Living and Recycling.
Eugene is the Category Leader in Electricity with a perfect score. Much of the wet Pacific Northwest relies on Hydroelectric Power from dams, but Eugene draws an additional 9% of its electricity from Wind Farms. Eugene also buys back excess power from residents who install solar panels.
Eugene also ranked near the top for Recycling with their aggressive Recycling Programs
Portland - America’s top green city has it all: Half its power comes from renewable sources, a quarter of the workforce commutes by bike, carpool or public transportation, and it has 35 buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Hi Dennis,
Great info...I'm actually trading in my SUV for a hybrid this month so maybe we will move up to number 4!
By the way...I love your site look, "search", everything! Great job!

Thanks John, the MLS Search is powerful, enabling buyers to find exactly what they are looking for.
I am guilty of still driving a SUV myself. Dang I hate to get rid of it, but I probably should.

Great news. It’s great to see whole communities working together to help make things better for the future. It’s wonderful news for buyers, too – I find a lot of homebuyers are looking for green living options.

You've got that right Sam, Eugene is a City in the Forest, it is beautiful and it does rain a little. :)
Not only did Austin make the top 10, but TX has four cities on the top 50 list. Seems like it is very important to people in Texas as well. I wrote a Blog on Eric Bramlett's site about it, giving credit to Austin.
So there are the red and blue states, but Oregon & Texas are green states ;)

I'll bet Eugene is also green in terms of the landscape - all that rain. Austin made the top 10 list as well and I was glad to see that.

That's great. Sadly, Las Vegas is very far behind in conservation, although the water district is doing fairly well. One of the suburbs is getting its first green housing community and there are about a half dozen green condo communities being built in Vegas.

Hi Charles, It is quite a change from Las Vegas here, I left Las Vegas not quite 2 years ago after spending 23 years there. I was with RE/MAX Associates in Green Valley.
I really love it here, it is just so beautiful all the time. Sam is correct we get a little rain ;) but it is worth it.
I hope things are going good for you in the City of foreclosures. Where is the green housing community you mentioned? The last place we lived was in Southern Highlands. We miss our house, wish we could have brought it up here with us.

That's excellent! Kudos to Portland, Oregon! I can only hope that all cities in the United States will strive to be more like Portland: the exemplary city.

That is really cool. I think it is really great how people will work together for the common good. I also would love to live in places like those, and be able to help out with all the greenness.

Hi guys this is James here.Oregon's climate—especially in the western part of the state—is heavily influenced by the Pacific Ocean. The climate is generally mild, but periods of extreme hot and cold can affect parts of the state.

I am glad these communities which are making the effort to improve themselves and their enviroment are getting the recognition they deserve.
